Painted Boats

Morning sun glinted off rows of overturned boats (plastic kayaks) in Monona Bay's Brittingham park in Madison, Wisconsin. I captured the image in black and white and painted in the rainbow hues by hand, using a Wacom tablet and stylus.  Dynamic and colorful, it is one of my favorites. It's not a great picture of boats. Rather, it is an abstract composition built on the irregular repetition of the curved keels -- and the rainbow of colors, of course. Texture in the scathed hulls, in addition to granularity, adds depth and interest.
