Paul's Books. August 30, 2020.
During the summer of 2020 there were rallies and demonstrations in Madison, Wisconsin. Shop windows on State Street were broken, and stores soon closed their doors and boarded up their facades with sheets of plywood and waferboard.
Paul's Books, a local landmark for decades, was one of them. Rather than leave the boards empty and plain, someone at the shop decided a floral landscape with a Toni Morrison quote might lift the mood, and it did brighten mine and capture my attention.
I edited this shot to remove screw holes and seams between boards. Looking back now, I could have left them. Maybe someday I will revisit the shots I took that morning. Adding to the intensity and stress, the summer of 2020 was also during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Paul's Books, the best used book store in the state, closed in 2025 after a 70-year run.
