It was around 2007 that I was transitioning from film to digital, and while many of the systematic darkroom steps and concepts were transferrable, my file naming and print management systems left something to be desired. Back then, Photoshop software came on a CD; four gigs of RAM was a lot; and most monitors were still cathode ray tube technology. Creating these early prints—from digital capture to print—was a blend of excitement and frustration (maybe not so different from today). When I woke that November morning, there was snow, the first of the season was gently falling over the rolling hills of southwestern Wisconsin. I grabbed my Fuji X-20 and headed out for this location. There was a white barn and farmhouse to the left outside the frame. There is not a lot a lot of color in this image, but it is not monochrome. The capture probably dates to 2018. A precarious balance it was. The old pitcher with the spalted black on white glaze came from my grandparents home in southern Wisconsin. I think I had a Canon camera at the time, one of my first digital cameras as I transitioned from film. The foreground is indeed its snow-covered bank.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like the look of woodcut or linocut ink prints, and I was going for that look with this scene.
